What are the Elements of the Zodiac Signs in Astrology?

Updated on June 24, 2014

The Elements or the Triplicities

The elements of the Zodiac are divided into four sections which contain three Zodiac signs in each. They are Fire, Earth, Air, or Water. Like the qualities of the Zodiac, the signs in the elements are also seasonal driven. Elements refer to the basic nature and temperament of a sign; however the Qualities address their manner of expression. I have written another hub regarding the Qualities of the Zodiac. Please refer to that hub for information on that issue.

The qualities are separated by 120 degrees. Astrological aspects prove that a 120 degree difference (a trine) generally get along beautifully unless there are other, more negative, aspects in the natal charts that make the two people incompatible.

Fire Element

Those born under a fire sign are almost always passionate, energetic, and impulsive. The fire signs are confident, enthusiastic, and generally have a positive outlook on life. They deal with tragedy much better than most other signs. The fire signs are resilient! They say their peace, and are then accepting of any situation, then move on with their lives. Whoa, are these signs feisty! Please don’t cross them, or you may suffer the heat of the fire. The fires signs are:

Earth Element

The earth signs are very grounded, realistic, and reliable. They are cautious and careful with each task they commit to. They are hard working and will do what it takes to achieve and maintain security. These signs are the Zodiac’s examples of reality. Accept it the way it is, and move forward to obtain the goals you have set for yourself. They are determined, dependable and make the best of friends.

  • Taurus, the bull
  • Virgo, the maiden

Air

Air Element

Air signs are the intellectuals of the Zodiac. They are very social and conversational sharing ideas and bringing information to the conversation. They are usually extroverts and lots of fun to be around. The Air signs use their minds to get through life. They would rather rationalize a situation as opposed to jumping to conclusions. They are methodical. Don’t be fooled by their aloof and somewhat flighty disposition. That is a mere facade to analyze the situation and possibly you as a person. Remember, they are mind and communication oriented, and will go to extremes to determine the type of situation they are in or the type of people they are dealing with.

Water

Water Element

The Water signs are the emotional signs of the zodiac. Cancer is a representation of rain. Scorpio is representation of ice. Pisces is representation of a flood. These signs generally lead their lives by their feelings. If it “feels” right they go for it. Intellect plays a part, however the heart always wins over the brain. Intuition always wins over logic. This emotional intuition enables them to show emotion when called for, as in a relationship, and to shut it off and hold it in when called for. They are the sensitive of all the Zodiac signs and can read emotions of others which make them attentive and affectionate when necessary; sometimes to a fault. They are deep feeling individuals although they may not show it; especially the Scorpio.

  • Cancer, the crab
  • Scorpio, the eagle
  • Pisces, the fish

The Importance of the Natal Chart

There are an abundance of areas to take into consideration when trying to understand a person. As said in other articles, the sun sign, rising sign, and moon sign are usually the most significant when learning of another’s personality. However, the exact date, time and place of birth can show much more. This is the information needed to discover an individual’s personal Natal Chart; the exact scene of the sky when that individual was born.

There are aspects between planets, planets themselves, and the houses they are in to study in order to completely understand someone’s emotions, actions, and personality in general. Professional Astrologers can read a natal chart and explain many reasons why people act and think as they do.

Thank you for your interest in my writing. I certainly hope the read was helpful and entertaining. I like to learn from others. All comments are appreciated.
