The Bible and Astrology

A Bible Reading

Sky at the Time of Christ’s Birth

If this is an accurate chart of the night sky at the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, you can see where the conjunction of the two planets of Jupiter and Saturn are the brightest light in the sky at that moment.

Biblical References

The astrological planet of Venus is often referred to as the “Morning Star” in the Bible. The placement of Venus in the sky signifies the brightest star before the dawn. It often appears at its brightest just before the Sun rises. It is believed that this is a symbol that the Messiah is one who brings the light of God to the world.

“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.” – Revelation 22:16

In addition, one of the brightest heavenly bodies seen from Earth is an Astrological conjunction of the planets Jupiter and Saturn. This was discovered by Astronomer and Mathematician, Johannes Kepler in the year 1600. It is also known as a “Great Conjunction” because of the amount of illumination it throws off. It takes twelve Earth years for Jupiter to complete one revolution around the Sun. It takes Saturn approximately thirty Earth years to revolve around the Sun. Because of this, a great conjunction occurs every eighteen to twenty years.

What’s known as the “Greatest Conjunction” is a great conjunction astrologically opposed by the Sun giving it an even brighter appearance. The last time this happened was in 7 BC and is believed to be the “Star of Bethlehem”. The next time this alignment is due to be seen from Earth is in the year 7541. The Star of Bethlehem was God’s signal to the three Magi that the Jewish Messiah has been born. The Magi were Kings and Astrologers. They were told to follow this star to deliver their gifts to the Son of God. Some believe that Jupiter is the astrological planet that represents kings, and Saturn is the astrological planet that represents the Jewish people. Therefore, when you interpret this philosophy, the time and place of the birth of Christ signifies Him as the King of the Jews.

Astrology as a Gift

Astrology is the study of the heavenly bodies in the universe, unable to be touched or manipulated by man. I believe these bodies were selectively placed there by God Himself for us to use as a guide in order to see our similarities as humans, and build camaraderie with each other.

Many of us honor Saints and prophets, but do not worship them. They are extraordinary humans Blessed by God, but not worthy of idolizing. According to the Bible, Jesus Christ is, was, and will always be the only human worthy of worship since He is the Son of God sent to Earth for the purpose of saving the human race from their own sins. He has taken the punishment so that we can be forgiven and dwell in the house of the Lord Almighty when we leave this planet and these fallible bodies.

More Bible Scriptures

  • "There shall be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars." - Luke 21:25
  • “God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.” - Genesis 1:16
  • “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place…” - Psalm 8:3
  • “The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another” -1 Corinthians 15:41

Idolatry is a sin. Worshiping idols brought about by this Earth such as money, fame, power, false gods, celebrities, and perverted, evil life styles are an abomination to God. It is written as the second commandment, “You shall have no other gods before me.” – Exodus 20:3, written again, “You shall have no other gods before me.” – Deuteronomy 5:7

With that in mind, it is important to understand, first, that the heavens, the stars and planets in the universe are not part of this world. That doesn’t mean it is okay to worship them, but I believe they can be used as a tool to understand each other better, just as any self help book, philosophical books, relationship aiding books, and the Bible itself. We don’t “worship” the Bible, we use it as a guide. It, too is a gift from God. I believe the stars and planets in the heavens are gifts from God to give peace, understanding, and tolerance to those who are interested in finding it. After all, the better we understand each other, the more we can tolerate the differences between us.

Similarities Between Astrology and the Bible

Stars and Planets in the Heavens

It is common knowledge that although stars appear to twinkle in the sky, planets do not. They illuminate one steady stream of light reflected by the Sun.

Believe it or not, But it Sure is Interesting

  • On the fourth day of creation, God created the Sun, Moon, and stars. This is when these four natural and astrological times came into effect, and are used to this day. Four is the number of the great elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Four are the regions of the earth: north, south, east, and west. Four are the divisions of the day: morning, noon, evening, and midnight. Four are the seasons of the year - spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Four are the great variations of the lunar phases.
  • The number seven is significant in many parts of the Bible including seven days of creation and the seven colors of the rainbow given to us as a promise never to flood the world again, just to name a few. Rainbow colors are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. In ancient Astrology, the seven primary astrological planets, and those that carry the most influence even today are: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.
  • The view of the sky from Earth in Astrological terms is separated by twelve houses, or twelve sections of life. The Old Testament of the Bible teaches us about the twelve tribes of Israel. In the New Testament of the Bible it is shown that Jesus had twelve disciples.

Is this a coincidence? Personally I don’t believe in coincidence. I believe that everything is and happens for a reason.
