The History of the Blue Lacy Dog

The story of the official Texas State Dog begins with a family of brothers; the Lacy brothers The Lacy brothers were from the state of Kentucky, and moved to Texas. It was in Texas, 1858 when the Lacy brothers, Frank, George, Edwin, and Harry decided to cross breed dogs to find the type with the strength and agility to herd cattle and hogs, and the sensitive smell that can track an animal while hunting. They needed a hunting dog and a herding dog all rolled into one dog.

Now this dog also had to be family friendly. It had to be tolerant, intelligent, and easy to train. The breed of this dog is quite remarkable. These are very healthy dogs. The only health problem you may experience is skin or coat issues. This canine has the following ancestry for specific reasons. A Texas Blue Lacy Dog is a mixture of:

  • Grey Hound
  • English Shepherd (or Scent Hound)
  • Wolf

Official Texas State Dog

The Texas Blue Lacy Dog, the official Texas State Dog, is a medium sized dog. It is a short haired, dog with a velvet like coat that comes is the colors of gun metal grey (blue), tan (red), and tricolored. This canine obtained its soft, fine, sleek coat from its greyhound ancestry, along with agility and tremendous speed. The greyhound is also an extremely aggressive, but intelligent breed.

The eyes of a Texas Blue Lacy Dog are inherited by their wolf ancestry and glow brightly in shades of blue or orange to yellow. These eyes can see much better than the average dog; especially at night. They also get their determination and drive from the Wolf’s Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) running throughout their bodies, as well as wild instincts.

The English Shepherd (or Scent Hound) contributed their keen sense of smell. Some say they have one of the most sensitive noses in the canine species. These dogs are also know for their high energy work ethic. They love to work!

Because of the mix of breeds, this dog also makes a great family pet as long as the children are a bit older. This dog is extremely easy to groom because of its thin haired coat. Just remember, it is an extremely active dog. It is best for the Blue Lacy to have a large place to run and to be challenged with toys If not being used for herding, hunting or trapping.

According to dogbreedinfo.com, this brilliant, lovable, loyal animal is the most common breed used by United States Trappers! What an honor!

Where can I get one?

When I first heard of the Texas Blue Lacy, I thought they were the most beautiful dogs! The puppies were so adorable; they brought tears to my eyes just looking at them online. Well, my husband and I discussed the possibility of getting one, however at the time you could only get them in Texas and Kentucky. There are many legal hoops to jump through as well. Texas doesn’t just toss their state dog to just anyone.

Since then, we have decided to hold off on getting a dog, but maybe one day we will change our minds. In the mean time, if you are interested in knowing more about this amazing canine, please enjoy the links to the right.

Please Spay and Neuter Your Pets

No matter where you decide to adopt the newest member of your family, please be sure to have your new fuzzy friend spayed or neutered. Statistics show the amount of innocent animals that are euthanized is shocking.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), each year in America about 3-4 million pets are euthanized. 60% of dogs and 70% of cats that are dropped off at shelters all over the country are euthanized. In order to control the pet overpopulation, once again I ask, please have your animals spayed and neutered. I also encourage everyone to rescue an animal from a shelter. Believe it or not, there are many pure-bred cats and dogs locked up in animal prison just wanting to love somebody, and be loved back.
