Great Ideas for Date Night

Is your significant other worth giving your undivided attention for a few hours one night a week?

At the time you decide to commit to your loved one, choose one evening that works for both of you to spend quality time together. Having a date night has been recommended by marriage counselors, psychologists, and family therapists. It is extremely healthy for your relationship when you give each other uninterrupted time for communicating and rekindling your love for one another.

Here are a few ideas:

  • You could have a traditional date by going out for dinner and to see a movie.
  • Perhaps a sporting event is your cup of tea, whether you participate or just watch.
  • Maybe a play, opera, or musical would be fun.
  • Couples massages would release tension and you could share that relaxing moment together.
  • There are also many dinner theaters, some with audience participation.
  • Carnivals and State Fairs are always exciting.
  • If afternoon dates work better for you, the zoo is great fun! Who doesn't love to watch animals?
  • How does a concert sound? (no pun intended)
  • A good comedy show is always worth a laugh. (pun intended).

Whatever the two of you decide to do, just be sure to enjoy yourselves, and the incredible, wonderful company you keep.

Here are the rules:

You may choose any night of the week, as long as you are consistent and committed. There are, however, a few rules to this communication technique.

  • The evening must last a minimum of three hours.
  • Only the two of you are allowed to go (get a babysitter if you need to – often times, friends will work together if you have two separate date nights. You can babysit for them, and they for you)
  • You must leave the house.
  • No negative talk allowed. Stick to upbeat and positive subjects like good days at work or the accomplishments of your children. Telling jokes or reminiscing would be a great idea. Share your childhood memories, or college memories, if you dare.
  • Touching is required. You may hold hands for a bit, sit on each others' laps, and hug and kiss (respectively, remembering you are in public).
  • Dress up for each other. Pretend it is your first date. You both deserve to spend the evening with the one you love at his or her best.
  • Absolutely no arguing allowed! You are doing this to relieve stress, reacquaint yourselves with each other, and have fun!

Don't let finances stop you from your date night!

With today’s economy not being what it was before, many of us are struggling financially. It may not be feasible to go out and spend money when you are trying to keep you head above water, paying your bills. That should not stop you from date night, though. There are lots of free and low cost adventures you can take together.

  • How about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (and maybe a bottle of wine, although I’m not sure if white or red goes with PB&J) on the beach, at the lake or at the park?
  • A long stroll around your neighborhood, arm in arm is romantic, unless you want to race. That could be fun too.
  • Most cities have entertainment sections in the local newspaper that advertise free concerts, art festivals, and renaissance fairs.
  • Go window shopping at the mall or people watching inside the airport. Sometimes, if you stay outside of the airport, just watching the planes take off and land, can be fascinating.
  • Maybe you can bring out those inner children in you and play at the playground. Push each other on the swings or have fun on the see-saw (but be nice and do not drop your partner).
  • Nothing beats going out for ice cream. While you are at the ice cream parlor, play a game of some sort. Maybe a mind reading game, or share a crossword puzzle. You can also read to each other (My husband and I do that).
  • Just going for a ride, singing your favorite songs at the top of your lungs can be a tremendous amount of fun.

The most important thing about date night is to spend time together, uninterrupted, enjoying the company of each other, and keeping your relationship open, fresh and exciting.

Happy Dating! As always, I certainly hope this was helpful.
